Using language to build authority and influence!
Work is about performance, but performance comes from Great Communicative Skills. Business Relationships are built on what we say and how we say it. Every time we open our mouth, speech conveys our ideas, intelligence and our values; it also conveys our assurance, confidence and leadership. Appearance may be what people notice, but words can undercut or overcome initial impressions. The course doesn’t teach grammar, vocabulary or pronunciation, but the charisma of conversation, the power of communication; speech awareness. Language can make you sound like a director or leader while you may be in a lower authority. You can borrow authority from words… you can sound like a manager. At school, we usually study language in the educational context, but we fail to learn the Sociology of Language. How social forces and speech patterns interact is out of our national curriculum. Language learning is largely unconscious, it hardly seems necessary to offer instructions. Language creates identity. Language reveals who we are. We draw identity from our speech habits … which we must change. It is the psychology of speech makes your speech powerful. Language is power and the knowledge of language is a political tool. This belief will enhance the power of your speech.
Language from the Center
Language from center is the right way to stay in the balance; not go to the extremes of aggressiveness. It directs rather than responds. For example: The Manager: I want to discuss the cost reduction of the project. Employee: Let’s look at this … This the way language from the center directs rather than responds. This language is directive; this leads the listeners to where the speaker wants to take them. Language from the center makes statements. Speak with instrumentality. Language from the center contextualizes with authority. Instrumentality means that it offers solutions to problems. The speaker is bold and thinks the listener as students and the speaker as a master who is willing to teach or direct the student in an issue.
Language from the Edge
Statements make you language from the center and questions make your language from the edge. Speaking from Center puts you in the center of attraction and questions put you at the edge. Language from the edge is interested more in the process of conversation, they are sympathetic and they are not confronting or arguing, but simply want the conversation flow. The center speakers are directive and controller of the conversation while the edge speakers are those who want to be a part of the process. The edge speakers take the conversation as a group activity rather than a presentation. The price of the language from the edge is rewarding when you are a new person, may be at a company, because this gives you understanding of what is happening. Team workers usually take language from the edge and the teachers usually take the language from the edge center.
